Social transformation in the mid-hills - Duradanda

This research project endeavors to delve into the profound social transformation initiated by the 'Halo Kranti' (Plough Revolution) in Duradanda, Lamjung, Nepal. The Halo Kranti movement, led by young Brahmins aiming to challenge caste-based discrimination, particularly the historic exclusion of Brahmins from ploughing fields due to their high-caste status, presents a unique context for social change. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, encompassing ethnographic fieldwork, surveys, and archival research, to comprehensively examine the multifaceted effects of Halo Kranti on the local society.

Key research dimensions include assessing shifts in caste dynamics, labor patterns, land ownership, and economic empowerment within the community. Moreover, the project will investigate the impact of the Plough Revolution on gender roles, as women were traditionally more involved in fieldwork, and how this change influences the broader social fabric of Duradanda. By shedding light on the intricate interplay of caste, gender, and economic transformation, this research seeks to provide insights into the dynamics of social change and empowerment in rural Nepal, contributing to our understanding of similar movements globally.
